With a growing community and nationwide need for inpatient psychiatric care, Children’s of Alabama expands their Behavioral Health Unit.
Doster Construction Company recently completed a 8,500 square foot expansion to the Children’s of Alabama Behavioral Health Unit. The project involved the complete demolition of an existing administrative space beside the psychiatric unit and expanded the Behavioral Health unit with 10 inpatient rooms, a sensory room for autistic spectrum patients, and a padded isolation room.
The design, by Birmingham architecture firm Poole & Company Architects, revolved around a large open “Day Space” with a central nurse’s station for observation. The ocean theme, large open area, and ambient/LED lighting combination gives this unit an appearance that is far from clinical. The new space will provide care for elementary-aged children admitted for behavioral health issues.
“It is rewarding to complete a technically challenging healthcare project that will directly impact the city of Birmingham by providing a safe, healing environment that is thoughtfully designed for children. We hope this new unit will allow the Children’s of Alabama staff to help many children in our community and state-wide,” said Poole & Company Architects.
